Brett Dennen Session with Barry Funkhouser

Brett Dennen is set to release a new LP titled, If It Takes Forever and they join Saturday Evenings host Barry Funkhouser for a chat!
Brett has been a friend of the station for a long time, first coming to The SoCal Sound (then KCSN) on his 2013 US tour with a full band around Smoke and Mirrors album. [see bottom of page for VINTAGE SESSION with Brett Dennen]
This session, Brett came in solo, just acoustic guitar and vocals. Discussing with Barry Funkhouser about the writing and recording process, Brett jokingly oversimplifies the recording process “like right there you press the button record and everybody knows exactly what to play and they know. And I just make up the words right there on the spot. And it all happens perfectly. One take and then we're done. 35, 45 minutes later we're done”
He continues to explain the real life process, “What I do is I write the songs in advance, and I take my time making sure I really want to record them and making sure that they they're in a place where I like. If there's something about the song I don't like, I usually scrap it or try to make it better. But sometimes, if sometimes I just roll with it and hope that it'll get better in the studio. I spend a lot of time. I spend more time writing the songs in advance than I do, actually being in the studio with musicians that usually only takes a week of my life. You go into a studio, you get some good musicians, you get somebody there pushing the things. You know, we turn the lights down a little bit you order Chinese food, just going to get there and you say, let's play a couple the ones. That sounds good, let's record it. And then boom, you do a couple two, 2 or 3, sometimes even four songs a day."
